Addressing the Key Concerns of BYOD Policies

We spend a whole lot of our time on our mobile devices — about a third of our working lives. With this constant connectivity comes the ability to get work accomplished almost anywhere at any time.

In response, many companies have adopted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy, which allows employees to use their personal devices while working. This can bring up several concerns for managers and IT department such as security, employee engagement, and costs. We’ll tackle the biggest concerns for your company and explain why BYOD policies are here to stay.

1.  BYOD Concerns: Security Risks

A Tech Pro Research survey found 74% of the companies that participated have a BYOD policy, and that number only continues to grow.

When considering adopting a BYOD policy, make sure to include security requirements for employees in order to qualify for your company program, as well as data recouping policies for when employees leave the company. Your company’s information will be secure if you work on enforcing your policy the right way and addressing any BYOD concerns.

2. IT Complexity

Along the lines of security, your IT department will have a more difficult time troubleshooting many different devices. However, overall costs decrease substantially with BYOD policies because you aren’t responsible for your employees’ devices.

It’s also important to work with your IT team to develop a BYOD policy to fit your company. Offer recurring training to employees and make passwords secure and mandatory. Have a plan in your policy that states exactly what IT can and cannot help employees with, and how employees can go about having their technology serviced. In the case of lost or stolen devices IT must be able to lock or wipe the phone of all sensitive information.

3. Employees Concerns and the Company BYOD Policy

Employees already use devices given to them by their employer for non-work related tasks, that should come as no surprise. But, giving your employees more flexibility will increase engagement and give them a sense of freedom. This is especially useful for employees who are out in the field working with those who are in an office or remotely located.

Gartner Consulting predicts that by 2017, half of employers will require employees to supply their own device for work purposes. “BYOD strategies are the most radical change to the economics and the culture of client computing in business in decades,” said David Willis, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “The benefits of BYOD policies include creating new mobile workforce opportunities, increasing employee satisfaction, and reducing or avoiding costs.”

BYOD is a policy that is increasingly popular and here to stay. Proactively addressing the key concerns that come along with it is the first step to creating a solution that fits your company’s needs. Businesses are responsible for their own security and the challenges you face doing that will not be much different with a BYOD policy. Don’t let fear of change cause your organization to miss out on all the advantages of a BYOD policy.
